SERRA DA ESTRELA CHEESE: SHARING CHRISTMAS MOMENTS AND MEMORIES
Already in the 14th century the cheese produced in Serra da Estrela was considered one of the best in the Kingdom.
Gil Vicente, in the 16th Century, “recommends” to the inhabitants of Serra da Estrela the sending of cheese as part of the gift to be offered by Beira Province to Queen Catarina, wife of D. João III, on the occasion of the birth of her male child. Subsequently, there are several writings that report the shipments of cheeses to the Royal Court, particularly during the Christmas season.
