SANTO ANTÓNIO DOS CABAÇOS
The chapel of Serra dos Cabaços, in Mangualde, is devoted to Santo António. In fact, because the image of such a venerated saint appeared there, Vicar Jozé Rebello de Mesquita, from the parish of São Julião de Mangualde de Azurara da Beira, ordered the construction of a chapel worthy of celebrating Mass, witnessed by the parish inquiry, dated June 9, 1758. In the summer of 1759 the chapel was blessed and placed for worship.
At that time, and even before the construction of the chapel, there was a large influx of pious Christians who, on a daily pilgrimage and on holy days, would go there to venerate the saint and offer many gifts.
Today, there are many shepherds who, taking their adorned flocks, together with other visitors come there on pilgrimage , in a centuries-old tradition that can be participated every June 13th.
This year, due to the current circumstances, the aforementioned pilgrimage of the shepherds of Serra da Estrela and their sheep will not be held, however, we wanted to pay a fair tribute to the Shepherds for their dedication to pilgrimage with more than a thousand years of tradition.
The Chapel will be open on that day for visits and adapted to the necessary health and hygiene rules.
