BEING A SHEPHERD IS VERY DEMANDING, AND TÓ LIKES HIS PROFESSION

Tó is 29 years old and his daily life is to walk with the herd in the fields, an activity that he says he likes a lot and that continues the family tradition.

Tó is also known as the son of Zé Bião and almost all of his life was spent in the pastoral environment. First with a smaller herd, now with 151 sheep, 4 lambs, 12 goats and 5 male-goats.

It is Tó who has the greatest responsibility but has the help of his parents.

His day starts shortly after 6am with the milking of the sheep. Then, while they wash the milking tools, Tó prepares to take the herd to the pastures. He will spend the day with the animals on land with improved pastures.

In summer he sows sorghum and in winter ryegrass and rye on about 20 hectares. The vast majority are leased land.

It is his older brother who brings him lunch around 1 pm and Tó continues with the herd until around 5 pm.

He spends the day in the countryside only with the herd and his cell phone helps to pass the time.

On his way back to the sheep he puts fresh straw in the feeders and clean water so that the sheep can eat and drink overnight.

After milking and washing the utensils, he goes home for dinner and a coffee with friends. Sometimes it takes longer to leave, but it can’t be every day because, as Tó says, being a shepherd is demanding and difficult and you have to really enjoy this profession, as is his case.

Tó has always lived in an environment related to pastoral activity. Since his great-grandparents, the family has always had sheep and he liked to treat the animals from a very early age.

Mr. Zé Bião always had some sheep but as a secondary economic activity. However, with Tó manifesting his intention to be a shepherd, the flock grew.

Tó is a young man with few words, but you can clearly see the care and aplomb with which he treats his flock, which is all black sheep, well taken care of and beautiful.

During the year, with the help of his father, he plows and sows the land. The objective is to make straw bales and have pastures for the sheep.
